Self-Portrait

Level: Art 1/Drawing 1

Medium: Colored Pencil

Objective: Students created self-portait colored pencil drawings using a chosen color scheme.  They chose another color scheme for the background and included words that describe their personalities/interests/hobbies.
 

Positive and Negative Space

Level: Art 1/Drawing 1

Medium: Graphite

Objective:  Students learned about viewing images in terms of positive and negative space.  In this exercise, students will translate photographs into positive and negative space, breaking down the images into subject and background.

Dra​wing in the garden

Objective: Students applied their positive and negative space to their drawings of the school garden. Students chose a focal point for their drawings, creating balance and composition.


Composition Collages

Objective:  Students created 3 distinct collages that illustrate symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial balance.

Watercolor and Nature

Level: Drawing 1

Medium: Watercolor

Objective:  Students learned 9 different watercolor techniques.  Students incorporated 2-3 techniques in small watercolor studies that depict nature.

Hands: Robot to Realistic

Level: Drawing 1

Medium: Graphite

Objective:  Students learned to draw the hand by using geometric shapes, cylinders and rectangular cubes, to understand and capture the form.  They then translated their robot style hands into realistic hands using contour line.   

Contour Hand Project

Level: Drawing 1 

Medium: Ink and Watercolor

Objective: Students drew their hands in pen using contour lines to express shape and form.  Students surrounded their hands with silhouette drawings of objects that represent their personalities.  Students chose a composition to arrange their objects: asymmetrical, symmetrical, or radial.  Students learned about different watercolor techniques and incorporate 2-3 of these techniques to paint the background in their drawings.

Illustrate a story: Day in the life of an ordinary object​

Level: Art 1

Medium: Pencil and Oil Pastel

Objective:  Students individually wrote stories to the prompt, "The Day in the Life of (insert ordinary object here)".  They illustrated their stories using a 6 frame storyboard before choosing 3 scenes to summarize the beginning, plot, and resolution.  Students illustrated their final 3 frames using oil pastel.

Texture, Texture, and More Texture

Level: Drawing 1

Medium: Ink

Objective:  Students practiced rendering different visual textures using pen and ink.

Social Issue Poster

Level: Art 1

Medium: Tempera paint, soft pastel

Objective:  Students will create a poster that addresses a social issue.  Students must communicate a specific point of view or message in their poster through the use of visual cues: imagery, symbols, color, and composition.

​Surrealism

Exquisite Corpse

Level: Drawing 2 

Medium: Pencil

Objective:  Students learned about surrealist techniques to channel the unconscious mind: automatic writing, collage and exquisite corpse.  Students participated in an exquisite corpse activity in groups of 3 to discover a new form through fragmentation and free association.

Medium:  Magazine Collage

Objective:  Students collaged artworks that demonstrate at least one Surrealist visual device:  scale, dislocation, juxtaposition, levitation, transformation/metamorphosis.  Their collages needed to include color gradations paper pieces of various shapes and sizes.

Metamorphosis Drawing

Level: Drawing 1

Medium:  Ballpoint Pen

Objective:  Student created drawings that illustrate the metamorphosis of two distinct things in four stages.

Multiple Points of View

Level: Drawing 1

Medium: Graphite Pencil

Objective:  Student explored looking at a singular object through multiple points of view to 8 different compositions that amount to one larger drawing: zoom in, zoom out, aerial, and worm's eye.
