Trained as a dancer before ever picking up a paintbrush, the presence of a mirror and the examination of the figure are major influences in the development of my ideas as an artist. The body is the most basic, unifying form that connects all human experience while the gaze reveals the specificity and complexity of an individual's psyche. The figures in my drawings and paintings are actors who play a role in depicting my own mythology, informed by fact, fiction, memory and feelings. They are set in spaces that shift between real and psychological landscapes, only alluding to narratives so the viewer may indulge in his/her own projections.
The process of layering paint corresponds to my experience of living, where not everything is as it seems, and what appears simple is a complex product of choice, intention, and luck.
