Mini Personal Still Life

Level: Art 1

Medium: Graphite on paper

Objective: Students learned about composition rules/guidelines and how to arrange objects in space to achieve different goals.  They created a still life artwork using graphite pencil that reflects their personalities and values using blending. Artworks will demonstrate a full range of values and realism.

Wayne Thiebaud Inspired Project 



​Level: Art 1 

Medium: Acrylic Paint 

Objective:  Students learned about the artist Wayne Thiebaud, how what we want paint reflects a time, a cultural and a feeling.  They create acrylic paintings of a food item that elicits a memory or reflects a cultural tradition in their lives.

Self-Portraits 

Level: Art 1

Medium: Graphite pencil

Objective:  Students created self-portrait drawings by employing the grid method and using graphite pencil to capture a wide range of values, or range from light to dark.

Hands In Motion

Level: Art 2 

Medium: Colored Pencils 

Objective:  Students learned how to draw hands using both contour line and full value.   They made colored value scales by blending complementary colored pencils.  Students created artworks that depict their hands in motion and reflect one of the following prompts:
  1. Concrete:  What do your hands come into contact with in your daily life?  What is a typical day for your hands?
  2. Conceptual: What are you reaching for in your life right now?  Draw your hopes, dreams, desires, wishes, and/or goals.
  3. Personal:  Draw your favorite things!  These items must be specific to you and only you, show me your personality.  

Twist, Turn, Push, Pull

Level: Art 2

Medium: Charcoal on Paper 

Objective: Students learned about the proportions of the figure, gesture drawing, how to manipulate value in charcoal.  Students created an original artworks using their own photographs that illustrate one of the following words: twist, turn, push or pull.


Oil Paint Still Life 

Level: Art 2 

Medium: Oil paint on canvas 

Objective:  Students learned the fundamentals of oil painting, focusing on color mixing and planar analysis.  Students chose an object and background to light, photograph, crop and paint.

Unlikely Perspectives

 Level: Art 3

Medium: Students choose a drawing medium: graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, pastel, markers.

​Objective: Students learn about cropping, foreshortening and perspective as a way to "reframe" a subject.    They created works of art that resist a familiar person, place or thing in an unlikely or unusual way.

Spirituality

​Level: Art 3 

Medium: Assorted Mediums 

Objective:  Students were asked to think and reflect on their own spirituality.  Using mediums of their choosing on an 18" x 24" scale, students made artworks that addressed the theme of spirituality as it pertains to their lives.  Selected students were chosen to exhibit their work at the Robert Graham Memorial Exhibition in Downtown, Los Angeles at Our Lady City of Angels Cathedral.
